2017年12月26日「モバイル英語学習」第435号(英語のエッセイ): Nice Grandparents

—————–
Many of my university students go to visit their grandparents at the beginning of the year. Of course, they love their grandparents, but they also like the New Year’s money that they give them. Do you know how much money you should give a child at this time of year? According to one website, elementary school children should get between 1,000 and 3,000 yen, junior high school students should get 3,000-5,000 yen, and high school students should get 5,000-10,000 yen. You don’t need to give university students anything because they are almost adults. Luckily, my students have nice grandparents. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

I work for a public school in Tokyo. Before that, I worked for several different companies for many years. I wanted to be an English teacher, but teaching English is only 10% of my job. At school, we have to do a lot of paperwork. We also have to counsel students and give them guidance. We often have to talk to their parents, too. Since the parents can only come to school after work, we have to stay late. There is not a lot of money for education in Japan, so there aren’t enough teachers or other staff. These are the reasons why homeroom teachers cannot leave school earlier. (by a reader)
