One city in Germany decided to make its police dogs wear shoes in February 2008. This may sound like a strange fashion, but the police did it to protect the dogs’ paws. In one part of the city drunks leave broken bottles in the streets. Many dogs got injured by stepping on the broken glass. If the dogs wear special shoes, they don’t get cut by the glass. The biggest problem is getting the dogs used to wearing the shoes. According to the dog handler, it takes about two weeks for them to adapt. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Ireland has a famous beer called Guinness. The brewery also publishes the famous Guinness Book of Records. Now the company can put itself into its own book. In December 2007, a man drove into the Guinness brewery in Dublin, the capital in a truck and stole a trailer loaded with kegs of beer. There was enough beer on the truck for 40,000 pints (1 pint=600 ml). It is the biggest theft of beer in the history of Ireland. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
