In a small town in the north of the United States, the birds have started acting strangely. This year, it got cold early in Minnesota. There was an early frost, and the berries on the trees started to ferment. The sugar in the berries turned to alcohol. Many birds eat these berries before they fly south for the winter. What happens to them? The alcohol makes them drunk. They can’t control themselves. Some birds fall out of trees and others fly into windows or cars. The police say that you shouldn’t worry if you see a drunk bird on the ground. It will wake up later and be fine. (by Douglas Jarrell)

Notes
be offended 傷つけられる;
thoughtfulness 思いやりの心
——————————–
A university student was on a crowded subway train. Then a man in his late 60s or early 70s got on the train and stood near him. The young man stood up and offered the seat to him, but the old man got very angry. The young man was shocked, and since then he is afraid to give up his seat for the elderly. What a sad story! I think the old man thought he was still young, so he was offended. But I think he should have accepted the young man’s kindness and said “I’m fine” with a smile on his face. He should have thanked the young man for his thoughtfulness. (by Douglas Jarrell)
