There is a video on YouTube called “18 Weird Things That Only Exist in Japan.” These things seem very strange to Americans. I’ll tell you about three of them. If you are interested, you can go to YouTube and see the rest.
(1) You can turn around the seats on trains when you want to sit in a group of four. I’ve never seen seats like that on trains in any other country.
(2) Water comes out of the top of the toilet. You can wash your hands with it, and it’s a good way to save water.
(3) One fast-food chain has special napkins for women who want to cover their faces when they eat hamburgers. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)

Every year BBC makes a list of 100 special women. Some of them are leaders, some are people with great ideas, some have started groups to help others, and some are everyday heroes. This year, there are two Japanese women on the list. Takamizawa Setsuko is 90 years old, but she has started learning English so that she can help tourists who will come to the Tokyo Olympics. That’s amazing at her age! Okoda Yuki is also on the list. She is only 23 years old, but she has already discovered a new star. Her discovery may help other physicists understand how our solar system began.
