Tokyo had an election for governor yesterday, and for the first time a woman will be the governor of Japan’s largest city. There were 21 candidates. I think this election was more exciting than the last one because more people voted. The top three candidates got about 90% of the vote, but no candidate got over 50%. Even so, Koike Yuriko was the clear winner. She didn’t have the support of any major party, but she got almost 3,000,000 votes. Masuda Hiroya, who came in second, got fewer than 1,800,000 votes.
