I work for a public school in Tokyo. Before that, I worked for several different companies for many years. I wanted to be an English teacher, but teaching English is only 10% of my job. At school, we have to do a lot of paperwork. We also have to counsel students and give them guidance. We often have to talk to their parents, too. Since the parents can only come to school after work, we have to stay late. There is not a lot of money for education in Japan, so there aren’t enough teachers or other staff. These are the reasons why homeroom teachers cannot leave school earlier. (by a reader)
