Is intelligence something that is measured by success in school? Not always. In 1895, Albert Einstein wrote an exam to get into university. He failed all the non-science parts of the test. Yet Einstein went on to become one of the world’s best-known geniuses. Winston Churchill struggled in school and failed sixth grade. He went on to win a Nobel Prize and be elected prime minister of the United Kingdom twice. Whoopi Goldberg struggled to read and write and eventually dropped out of high school. She went on to win every major award for excellence in show business: the Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy. (by Shantel Ivits)

Notes
epidemic 伝染病の大流行;

In 2015, Bill Gates gave a TED talk just after the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. He was talking about the danger of new diseases. He said that viruses are probably more dangerous than war. We have special forces to fight wars, but we are not prepared for an epidemic. The world needs a large group of doctors and other medical professionals to stop epidemics. If a new virus spreads through the air like influenza, it can kill millions of people. Now we have Covid-19 which has spread all over the world and killed more than 280,000 people. He was right. We weren’t ready. (by Prof. Douglas Jarrell)
