For people living in Australia the sun is a daily threat to health; causing skin cancer which kills thousands every year. However scientists in Australia say they are close to producing a pill that would protect us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. A sunscreen pill could be available within five years. This is good news for sun-lovers as they would only need to take a pill once a week, instead of having to put on sunscreen on every few hours. A sunbather on Sydney’s Bondi Beach welcomed this news, saying: “Bring it on. No more sunscreen. No more sunburn. Now we can stay out in the sun all day long.” As with all great inventions however there are always negative effects. Some scientists have warned that the pill could be harmful as too much sun protection can lead to vitamin D deficiency, resulting in weak bones. (by Prof. Simon Smith)

All children are told by their parents to “eat your greens!” But an outbreak in Europe of a deadly type of bacteria may change this. Although bacteria is in the gut of humans and other animals, some types are deadly such as E. coli. E coli is usually found in processed meats such as hamburgers or in dairy products such as cheese, milk, butter and ice cream. But now it has been found in vegetables and has killed 22 people in Germany. People in Germany are advised to avoid eating raw tomatoes, cucumbers and leafy salads until further notice. Just washing vegetables may not be enough to remove the bacteria. Perhaps the most effective way of killing the germs is to boil the food! (by Prof. Simon Smith)
